SOTA Speaks to Probus Club

The Port Augusta Probus Club were keen to learn more about School of the Air, so it was a good opportunity for Michael Kerin, Cheryl Eden and Jeane Schocroft to share some of their experiences at a meeting at the Centrals Club on Wednesday April 4.

Cheryl shared her experiences of teaching and learning with the HF radio from 1991 to 2000 and Michael shared humorous and poignant stories about the excitement and challenges of an Itinerant Teacher through the outback of South Australia, in his 4.5 years at SOTA.

Michael has travelled over 125000 km to work with students in their classrooms on 38 sheep and cattle stations. He has experienced floods, drought, I bogging, 1 accident with a kangaroo and 4 flat tyres. He has been humbled by the way outback families have welcomed him into their unique classrooms and appreciated the help that he could provide to students with their learning.

Jeane fielded questions about how exams were carried out and members of the audience were keen to share their own stories about being part of the SOTA community in the early years. The audience was fascinated by the Distance Education concept and approached the staff with further sharing and questions at the end.

Thanks to the Probus Club for the invitation.
